1What the extension does

The extension helps you read and learn Chinese while browsing: you select or screen-capture (OCR) Chinese text on a web page to see its pinyin, meaning and pronunciation, and you can save words to a personal dictionary and review them with flashcards, quizzes and stroke-writing practice.

2Data stored on your device

The extension has no account and no login. Everything you create stays on your own device:

• Your saved vocabulary — the Chinese words and phrases you save, with their pinyin, meanings, categories and your own review statistics.
• Settings and caches — your preferences plus cached dictionary and stroke-order data.

This data is stored only in your browser's local storage (chrome.storage) on your device. It is never sent to us or to any server, and we cannot access it.

We do not collect your name, email, password, browsing history, the pages you visit, clicks, keystrokes, location, health, or financial information.

3Data processed but not stored by us

When you look up text, the selected text — or the text recognised by on-device OCR from a screen region you capture — is sent to a translation service to fetch its meaning. The result is shown to you and is only stored if you choose to save the word. OCR itself runs entirely on your device.

4Where data is stored

All of your data is stored locally on your device via chrome.storage so the extension works offline. The extension has no backend server and stores nothing about you remotely.

5Third-party services

To provide its features the extension sends requests to the services below. Only the text needed for the feature is sent — never your browsing history:

• Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com) — to translate selected words and sentences.
• jsDelivr CDN (cdn.jsdelivr.net) — to download stroke-order data for the writing-practice feature (cached afterwards).
• Tatoeba (tatoeba.org) — to fetch example sentences.
• AI translation providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google) — used only if you opt in by entering your own API key in Settings. The text you look up is then sent to the provider you chose, under that provider's own privacy policy.

6How we use data

Your data is used solely to provide the extension's features — looking up, saving, syncing and reviewing vocabulary. We do not use it for advertising or profiling.

7What we do not do

• We do not sell or transfer your data to third parties, outside the features described above.
• We do not use or transfer your data for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose.
• We do not use or transfer your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

8Permissions

• storage — save your words, settings and caches locally.
• activeTab — read the text you select or capture, only when you invoke the extension.
• offscreen — run on-device OCR (needs canvas and Web Workers).
• tts — speak pronunciations aloud.
• Host access to all sites — so lookups work on any page you read Chinese on. Only the text you select or capture is read.

9Data retention and deletion

All data is stored locally on your device. You can delete saved words in the app at any time, or remove everything by uninstalling the extension. Because the extension keeps no server-side account, there is nothing stored about you on our side to delete.

10Children

The extension is a general-purpose learning tool and is not directed at children under 13.

11Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
